Early Reading
Intent:
At Marton-cum-Grafton Primary School we intend all children to be able to read text from the very start with prosody and automaticity. We aim to ensure that early reading is taught in such a way that it reduces cognitive overload and consolidates phonetic understanding.
Implementation
Early reading will be implemented by using the Little Wandle Scheme based on Letters and Sounds. This will be taught with rigour and consistency, where expectations are high for all children regardless of background and their own starting points. The Little Wandle approach will be taught with fidelity throughout Early Years and Year 1.
Impact
Children are progressing due to the consistent structure of the teaching of early reading. Children know what to expect and all lessons are delivered following the same structure and using the same terminology. Adults are confident in what they are teaching, what further support they can offer and when it should be applied. Children are reading with expression and fluency without the need to decode verbally.

The resources on this page will help you support your child with saying their sounds and writing their letters. There are also some useful videos so you can see how they are taught at school and feel confident about supporting their reading at home.
